Avera McKennan Announces Creation of Avera Sports Institute
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Jan. 16, 2007) – Avera McKennan Hospital
& University Health Center is pleased to announce the creation of
the Avera Sports Institute (ASI), which will be housed in the former
Empire Golf and Sports Dome at 1601 W. 44th Place in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Building remodeling is currently underway and the grand re-opening of
the facility is planned for May 2007. When completed, ASI will be a
more than 40,000 square foot year-round athletic training center, the
largest and most comprehensive facility in the region.
The Avera Sports Institute will serve as the official home to Avera
McKennan’s world-class performance enhancement program, Avera McKennan
Acceleration. ASI will also become the training headquarters for Dakota
Gold Soccer, the Sioux Empire Baseball Association (SEBA), Todd Kolb
Golf Academy, the Tibbetts Instructional BasketBall School (TIBBS)
and the Sioux Falls Storm. Additionally, the Orthopedic Institute will
lease space in the facility.
“The Avera Sports Institute gives each of these organizations an
opportunity to develop new programming and services that just aren’t
available due to the lack of a large indoor training facility in Sioux
Falls. The new dome structure, along with new turf, heating, cooling,
and lighting, will provide a safer, more comfortable environment for
year-round training,” said Derek Ferley, an exercise physiologist for
the Avera McKennan Acceleration program.
